We all strive to put healthy and safe food on the table for our families. However, recent news may have some busy moms double-checking their fridge and deli orders. Boar’s Head Provisions Co., a well-known name in deli meats, has issued a significant recall of their ready-to-eat meat and poultry products due to concerns over possible Listeria contamination. Here’s everything you need to know to keep your family safe.
What's Been Recalled?
On July 30, 2024, Boar’s Head expanded an earlier recall to include approximately 7 million pounds of various ready-to-eat meat and poultry products. These items were produced between May 10 and July 29, 2024, and were sold under the Boar’s Head and Old Country brand names. The Board’s Head recall affects products that were intended for slicing at retail delis, as well as some pre-packaged items available at grocery stores. These products were distributed nationwide and even exported to several countries, including the Cayman Islands, Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Panama.
If you have purchased deli meats recently, look for “sell by” dates ranging from July 29, 2024, to October 17, 2024. The affected products can be identified by the establishment number “EST. 12612” or “P-12612” inside the USDA mark of inspection.
Why Is There a Boar's Head Recall?
The recall was initiated after the Maryland Department of Health discovered that a liverwurst sample tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, the bacterium responsible for listeriosis. Listeria is particularly dangerous because it can thrive even in refrigerated environments, making it a formidable contaminant in ready-to-eat foods like deli meats.
This contamination has led to a multistate outbreak of listeriosis, with 34 reported cases, including 33 hospitalizations and, tragically, two deaths. The most vulnerable groups include pregnant women, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems. Given the serious health risks, Boar’s Head took the responsible step of expanding their recall to ensure consumer safety.
A Look Back: History of Similar Board's Head Recalls
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time that Listeria has prompted a significant food recall. Similar incidents in the past have highlighted the dangers of this bacterium in various foods, particularly those that are not cooked before consumption. For example, in 2019, a large-scale recall of ready-to-eat chicken products also linked to Listeria monocytogenes prompted nationwide concern. Each of these incidents underscores the importance of vigilance in food safety practices both at home and within food production facilities.
What Should You Do if You've Been Affected?
Check Your Products: If you have Boar’s Head or Old Country brand products in your refrigerator with the specified “sell by” dates, do not consume them. These products should be discarded immediately or returned to the place of purchase.
Clean Your Refrigerator: Listeria can spread easily. To prevent cross-contamination, it’s crucial to thoroughly clean and sanitize your refrigerator, especially areas where the recalled products were stored.
Watch for Symptoms: If you or anyone in your family starts experiencing symptoms like fever, muscle aches, nausea, or diarrhea, contact your healthcare provider. For higher-risk groups, such as pregnant women or older adults, it’s essential to seek medical attention promptly, especially if symptoms develop within two months of consuming the contaminated food.
Stay Informed: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) continues to monitor the outbreak and provide updates. Keeping an eye on these developments can help ensure you stay ahead of any potential risks.
